Search engine market shares in Europe

If you target international markets then it's important to know which search engines are used by European web surfers.

Google has a large market share in the US. Astonishingly, Google's market share seems to be even bigger in Europe. Here are the numbers from Germany, France and the UK:

* Search engine market shares in Germany: With a market share of 88.5%, Google is the clear leader in Germany. Yahoo has 3.4%, followed by German ISP T-Online (2.2%), MSN (1.4%) and AOL (1.3%).

* Search engine market shares in France: With 89.79%, Google's has an enormous market share in France. Yahoo follows with 3.14%. MSN gets 2.48%, local ISP's Orange and Free get 1.89% and 0.72%.

* Search engine market shares in the UK: Google has a market share of 79.38% in the UK. Yahoo gets 7.72%. With 4.48%, Ask.com is the third biggest search engine in the UK. Microsoft's search engines MSN and Live get 3.75% and 1.53% (a total of 5.28% for Microsoft search engines).

Google is by far the most widely used search engine in these European countries. The stats show how important it is to optimize your website for Google. To get high rankings on Google, you need good inbound links and optimized web page content.

Yahoo Paid $160K to Lobbyist in 2007

Internet search company Yahoo Inc. paid $160,000 in the first half of 2007 to Clark & Weinstock to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form.

The firm lobbied on issues involving protection of children who go online, Internet radio and data security, according to the form posted online Thursday by the Senate's public records office.

Under a federal law enacted in 1995, lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches. They must register with Congress within 45 days of being hired or engaging in lobbying.

Yahoo is based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

How Effective is Google Personalized Search?

How Effective is Google Personalized Search? 57% Say There's No Difference, or it's Worse!

In Greg Linden's guest post defining Web personalization, he notes that Google Personalized Search uses technology acquired in 2003 from a small startup named Kaltix. He goes on to say that "the current version of Google Personalized Search learns from your search queries. Searchers do not have to do anything explicitly to use it; it is all implicit. The current Google Personalized Search likely is using the same Kaltix technology, building a high-level profile of you, then biasing all of your search results based on your long-term behavior."

With that in mind, it's curious that just under half (48%) of respondents in this week's R/WW poll haven't noticed any difference in their Google search results. Only 12% have seen an improvement, but perhaps of more concern is that 9% say their search results have gotten worse! You can test this yourself by going to googlonymous, which as the name suggests allows you to do an anonymous search on Google.

Mind Booster Noori also explained why personalized search results are inferior to him than anonymous results: "Google tends to give me the websites I already visit and know, but when I'm searching for something, I usually want to find something I don't know of, and Google fails to give me that. For me, usually, the results of a query to Google are better if I'm not logged in."
